Driveway Installation &
Block Paving in Essex

A well-laid driveway should look good from day one and still be performing years later. At Aspect Paving & Groundworks, we specialise in driveway installation and block paving for residential and commercial properties across South Woodham Ferrers, Chelmsford, and the wider Essex area.

Installed Properly.
Built to Last.

With over 30 years of experience in the paving and groundworks industry, we understand that the quality of a driveway is determined long before the first block is laid. Proper sub-base preparation and drainage assessment are what separates a driveway that lasts from one that doesn't, and we don't cut corners on either.

Much of Essex sits on clay sub-soil, which moves seasonally and is unforgiving of shortcuts in preparation. Our standard construction uses a C20 concrete sub-base, which provides the stability that clay ground requires. Where loads are heavier, such as driveways regularly used by electric vehicles like Teslas, or commercial vehicles we specify C25 concrete to match the demand being placed on the surface.

Drainage channel specification is assessed the same way. A standard residential driveway will typically use A15-rated channels, but where the load requirement is higher we specify B125 or above. Getting this right at the construction stage is far less expensive than correcting it later.

Where drainage to a soakaway is required, we carry out percolation tests before installation to confirm the ground can handle the flow. It's a step many contractors skip, we consider it essential.

FAQ — DRIVEWAYS

  • How long does a driveway installation take?

Most residential driveways take between one to two weeks depending on size and complexity. We'll give you a clear timeline when we quote, and we'll keep you updated throughout the job.

  • What sub-base do you use for driveways in Essex?

Essex has predominantly clay sub-soil, which requires a properly engineered subbase to prevent movement and settlement. We use  C20 concrete as standard. For heavier-use driveways — such as those regularly carrying electric vehicles or heavier cars — we specify C25 concrete. The right spec is assessed at the site visit and detailed in your quote.

  • Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

In most cases, permitted development rules allow a new driveway without planning permission, provided it uses permeable materials or drains water to a lawn or border rather than the road. We can advise on this during your site visit.

  • What type of drainage channels do you install?

Drainage channel specification depends on the load the driveway will carry. Standard residential installations typically use A15-rated channels. Where vehicles are heavier or usage is more demanding, we specify B125-rated channels or above. We assess this as part of every installation rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

  • What is a Brett-approved installer?

Brett is one of the UK's leading block paving manufacturers. As certified Premier Brett-approved installers, our installations using Brett products come with a 5-year installation guarantee and a 10-year Brett product warranty —backed by the manufacturer, not just by us.

  • Do you handle waste removal?

Yes. We hold a registered waste carriers licence, so all excavated material and site waste is removed and disposed of legally as part of every installation.
